Why a leak can leave oil behind
The compressor holds oil for its moving parts, and in a small refrigeration system that oil circulates through the whole circuit with the refrigerant before draining back. Where refrigerant finds a way out it vanishes into the room air, but some of the oil it carried stays on the metal as a greasy patch that soon gathers dust. Should I wipe the oily spot away?
Leave it. The spot tells a technician where to begin, and wiping it off removes the clue without closing any hole. Pressing on thin tubing to clean it can also worsen a weak point. If there is no oil anywhere, can I rule out a leak?
