Why Does It Switch On and Off Every Few Minutes?

Short answer
Something is cutting each run short before the section has cooled. Either the compressor is overheating and its protector stops it, or a sensor or the control is misjudging the temperature; a low charge can cause it too. Sub-Zero Repair Edmonds tells which for the $89 service call: (206) 210-3547.
Short runs, not failed starts
Short cycling (the compressor starting, running briefly and stopping, again and again) is a different fault from the one where it clicks and never starts. Here it does start and does run, just not for long enough to finish the job. Before anyone comes, note the pattern: roughly how many minutes on, how many off, and whether the cabinet is warming. That note saves time at the visit.
What ends a run early
- Heat. An overheating compressor is switched off by its overload protector and cannot restart until it cools. Dust on the condenser (the coil behind the grille) or a condenser fan that has stopped keeps it hot.
- A sensor that misreads. On Sub-Zero’s electronic built-ins each section has its own temperature sensor (a thermistor) reporting to the control, and the service manual lists a misreading one among the causes of a warm section. A sensor that says “cold” too soon ends the run too soon.
- The control. The board that switches the compressor on and off can itself fail.
- A low charge. The refrigerant flowing back through the compressor helps keep it cool; with too little of it, the compressor runs hotter and can trip on heat.
Why it is worth fixing soon

Isn't a Sub-Zero supposed to cycle on and off?
Yes. Cycling is how it holds a setting: the compressor runs until a section is cold, rests, then starts again as it warms. Could a dusty condenser really make it switch off?
It can. The condenser is where the compressor's heat leaves the machine. Packed with dust, or with its fan stopped, it holds that heat in, the compressor runs hot, and the overload protector cuts it off until it cools. With the power off at the breaker and gloves on, clearing loose fluff from the grille opening is fine.
