A panel-ready unit (one built to wear door fronts matched to your cabinets) carries panels cut to its own model's sizes, so a replacement may need new fronts on top of its price. Why the panels belong in the sum
Sub-Zero publishes door-panel dimensions for each model it offers panel-ready, down to the thickness the door will accept, and the fronts on your unit were made to those figures and finished like the cabinet doors around them. On some of these units the grille carries a matching panel too. A replacement whose doors are sized differently needs its fronts made again, and matched once more to cabinets that have had years of light and handling since they were new.
That work sits outside both numbers above. The replacement figure covers the unit before fitting and cabinetry, and new panels are cabinetry. A repair, on the other hand, leaves the fronts you already paid for exactly where they are.
When the old fronts can move across
Panels are not always lost with the unit. Sub-Zero has sold retrofit kits that let one generation’s framed door panels be mounted on the model that replaced it. Whether such a kit exists for yours depends on the model, which is a question for a Sub-Zero dealer before you count the panels as part of the cost.
Getting at it without taking the kitchen apart
A panel-ready refrigerator is still reached from the front. The condenser and the compressor area sit behind the grille, which comes off without disturbing the doors, so the diagnosis, and often the repair, happens with the unit standing in its opening. Whether one particular job needs it rolled forward is part of what the diagnosis settles.
Repair makes sense when
- The panels are in good order and would take real time and money to make again.
- The fault is a single part or a first sealed-system job, and the cabinet behind the fronts is sound.
- No current model takes your existing panels, and no retrofit kit is offered for your unit.
Replace it when
- The panels are damaged anyway, or due to be remade in a refresh of the kitchen.
- Behind the fronts the unit itself is failing: a cracked liner, a door that sags, rust at the frame.
- A dealer confirms that a current model accepts your panels, directly or with a kit.
