Short answer

The starting surge, and when it is too much
A motor standing still draws far more current than one already turning, and keeps drawing it until it gets up to speed. A healthy compressor (the motor-driven pump that moves the refrigerant) gets there almost at once, so the lights barely flicker. Two things stretch that moment out.
- A hard start. A compressor that is tight, worn, or missing the push its start relay should give stays stalled longer, and the current stays high the whole time.
- A weak supply. Voltage that sags under the load makes the start slower still, and a slow start can end with the overload protector clicking the compressor off.
What to learn about the circuit
Sub-Zero’s design guide requires its built-ins to have a circuit of their own, serving only the refrigerator, and a grounded three-prong wall outlet. If it shares a circuit or runs off an extension lead, mention it when you book. Reading the panel labels is fine; the wiring itself is an electrician’s work.
What the technician measures
The voltage at the unit during a start, the start relay and the overload protector, and the compressor’s windings. If the supply sags badly even with a sound compressor, the fix is on the house side and an electrician is the right call. If the supply holds and the compressor still labours, the fault is in the unit.

Is a quick flicker when the fridge starts anything to worry about?
